The assistant does nothing until you switch it on. It asks before logins, purchases and messages, and only acts on sites you approve.

Sync bookmarks and settings between your Macs if you sign in. History syncs encrypted, with a key only your Macs hold.

In this beta Tomato makes only these requests on its own. Everything else happens because you visited a site.

  • Safety list downloadsTomato downloads free, open lists of phishing and malware sites.
  • Crash reports, only if you say yesA report holds program names, offsets and version numbers. Never your pages or typing.

  • Every address you visitPhishing and malware checks happen on your Mac. No address is sent anywhere.

Known limitations

  • No DRM streamingNetflix, Disney+ and similar sites do not play.
  • No Chrome extensionsExtensions from the Chrome Web Store do not install.
  • No password saving in beta-v0.1Tomato does not save passwords or fill addresses and cards. Keep your password manager.
  • No account or sync yetEverything stays on the Mac you use it on.
  • Needs Open AnywayThe app is not notarized, so macOS asks you to allow it the first time you open it.
  • Fewer phishing warnings than ChromeWarnings use free open lists, which catch fewer sites than Google's.

Security fixes are best effort

During the beta, Chromium security fixes reach you on a best effort basis. They arrive only after the embedding framework Tomato uses ships them, so they may come later than in Chrome.

Tomato updates itself. When an update is ready, it asks you to restart.
